Recipe is from my older brother's MIL. She used to send these for my family to eat in the car on the way to the NJ shore for summer vacation. My Mom got the recipe and I started making them as one of my "specialties" when I was 10 years old!!!
2/3 cups shortening
2 1/4 cups brown sugar (1 box)
3 large eggs
2 1/3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
6 ounce package chocolate chips (optional)
Melt shortening in saucepan just to melting point.
Stir in brown sugar.
Cool slightly, put in mixer bowl.
Beat in 1 egg at a time until smooth.
Sift dry ingredients.
Stir into brown sugar mixture.
Add vanilla and mix well.
Add nuts and chips.
Spread into greased 9" x 13" pan.
Bake at 350º F for 20 to 25 minutes.
Cut into squares while warm and sprinkle with powdered sugar when cool.
