Boston Cream Cheesecake

A cake made with a base of cake mix, a cheesecake layer and chocolate on top.

for base:
1 (9 ounce) package yellow cake mix [Jiffy]
Other ingredients needed to prepare cake according to package
for cheesecake layer:
2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs
1/3 cup sour cream
for topping:
2 Tablespoons cold water
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
3 Tablespoons margarine
1 cup powdered sugar [sifted]
1 teaspoon vanilla
Strawberries for garnish if desired


for the Cake base:
Grease bottom of 9-inch springform pan.
Prepare cake mix as directed on package; pour batter evenly into springform pan.
Bake at 350F for 20 minutes.
for the Cheesecake layer:
Combine cream cheese, sugar and vanilla, mixing at medium speed on electric mixer until well blended.
Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Blend in sour cream; pour over cake layer.
Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.
Loosen cake from rim of pan; cool before removing rim of pan.
for the Topping:
Bring water to boil; remove from heat.
Melt chocolate with margarine over low heat; stirring until smooth.
Remove from heat.
Add water and remaining ingredients; mix well.
Spread over cheesecake.
Chill several hours.
Garnish with strawberries, if desired.

This recipe was posted by The New Mrs. G (currently known as Leelu) on the CooknChat message board back in 2004. She cooked it and reviewed it on the radio show she co-hosted, and she reported that it was the favorite of 3 cakes she made that day.

My modifications are in square brackets [ ]. We enjoyed it a lot. My DS suggests that the cake layer be smaller and the chocolate layer be larger.
