Pre-sliced mushrooms and beef strips are the time-saving superstars of this delicious, filling dish. And it's rich in protein and fibre to boot.

Makes 4 servings
1 bunch broccoli
1 red pepper
1 pound (500 g) top-sirloin steak or stir-fry strips
1/3 cup (75 mL) hoisin sauce
1/3 cup (75 mL) soy sauce
1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons (5 to 7 mL) five-spice powder
2 teaspoons (10 mL) cornstarch
1 Tablespoon (15 mL) vegetable oil
1 (8-ounce/250-g) package sliced button mushrooms, about 4 cups (1 L)
Cut stems from broccoli.
Peel, then slice into thin rounds.
Slice florets into small pieces.
Slice pepper into strips.
If using steak, cut off excess fat.
Then slice meat into thin strips.
In a small bowl, stir hoisin with soy, five-spice powder and cornstarch.
Heat oil in a wok or large, wide saucepan set over medium-high.
Add beef and stir-fry just until it changes colour, 2 to 3 minutes.
Add mushrooms, broccoli and pepper.
Stir-fry until vegetables begin to soften, 2 to 3 minutes.
Stir hoisin mixture and add.
Stir constantly until sauce thickens, about 3 minutes.
Best over rice or noodles.
